Irregular meetings and presentations of rotterdam based artists, designers and architects
(on invitation only)
> Organised by Marjolijn Dijkman / David Maroto and TENT. Rotterdam

Corrillos is an ongoing series of presentations by and for artists, architects, designers and theoreticians based in Rotterdam. The program tries to get insight in the particular art scene in Rotterdam, which mainly works and exhibit outside of their hometown. The Spanish word Corrillos stands for an informal meeting of people who casually gather together and discuss whatever topic in a non-hierarchic way. The program of Corrillos will consist of two presentations, try to challenge its formats and will each time have a different host.

For this project a publication is developed that can be collected during the project. The cover with two invitation cards was send at the start of the project and the invitationcards can be collected to create a publication mapping the Rotterdam artscene after a series of Corrillos evenings.

Lara Almarcegui
I want to question urban planning through the study of places which ascape a fixed definition of city or of architecture: empty lots, waste lands, demolition sites; places which due the forgetfulness or lack of interest escape a defined design and are open to all kind of possibilities.

Jan Jongert (2012 Architects)
2012 Architects was founded in 1997 and has three partners: Cesare Peeren, Jeroen Bergsma and Jan Jongert. All are deeply committed to recycling or 'reuse' as an integral design strategy'. Their activities are not just limited to architecture but also extend into other field of design and art.

Corrillos 3: December 2008

Host: Christien Meindertsma
Presentations by: Florentijn Hofman and Reineke Otten
Cooks for the evening:
Rood Kapje

Florentijn Hofman
The work of Florentijn Hofman
defies the everyday experience with unusual and striking works of art. They make a huge impact in the space due to its formidable scale. The location forms the starting point for his temporary objects and paintings, such as a bright yellow inflatable rubber duck, almost thirty meters tall, which creates a playful interaction with the surroundings.

Reineke Otten
In the project World Skin Colors, Reineke Otten maps the distribution of skin colours across the globe. As streetologist she examines the urban environment and uses the street and people as a source of inspiration. In 2006 she published her book China Daily Life with photos of everyday life in an environment that is rapidly developing.

Corrillos 4: February 2009
Host: Katarina Zdjelar
Presentations by: Ozlem Altin and Anke Bangma
Cooks for the evening: Rood Kapje

Ozlem Altin
'Emptiness enveloped in endless silence'
My artistic practice deals with the experience of marginal subjectivity, which haunt archival images and texts. Through print media, performance and video, I explore the personal and cultural representations and resonance of states of exhaustion, passivity and invisibility. My current work is concentrated primarily on book projects.

Anke Bangma
My current research evolves around the reality effects of visual documents. Connecting contemporary discussions with the use of the camera in the emerging science of psychology, brought me to think of documentary practices not in terms of their truth claims, but in terms of how they make us feel and act.

Corrillos 5: April 2009
Host: Huib Haye van der Werf
Presentations by: Hans Venhuizen and Ester van de Wiel
Cooks for the evening: Rood Kapje

Hans Venhuizen

My designs are processes for citites and areas that are experiencing change. In these processes the desired future identity is given time to develop out of the existing situation, instead of being conceived all at once. I show that taking a cultural approach to planning can often create unexpected links between the present and future.

Ester van de Wiel
As curator and designer, I initiated the Sunday Adventure Club during the summer of 2008. The Sunday Adventure Club is a temporary club of urban pioneers; citizens who, inspired by their personal passions, organize activites in the public space. They take the initiative, claim a space and create public places that , in the words of John Cage, “work so well we can run wild in them.

Corrillos 6: June 2009
Host: Jonas Staal
Presentations by: Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum and Matthias Pauwels (BAVO)
Cooks for the evening: Rood Kapje

Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum: 'For us as artists, working in the public space means that we think about what the public represents. When we were invited last year to involve the residentes of the districts of Overvecht (Utrecht) and Barakaldo (Bilbao) in an artistic project, we decided to use the zombie as a distorted image of the ideal citizen. We did this in order to draw attention to notions such as consumerism, the masses, dystopia, alienation and participation'.

Matthias Pauwels (BAVO): 'Through research and action, we engage in the synergy between the creative sector and public and private parties within the creative leap in scale of cities.  Artists and architects often appear to react with reservation to the great faith placed in them. By running campaigns, we enthuse our colleagues to shamelessly create a distinct profile for themselves in the area of the conceptualisation of cities, social revitalization and mobilization'.
