BAVO - a research team consisting of architect-philosophers, Gideon Boie and Matthias Pauwels - investigates the political dimension of art, architecture and planning. It was born of a discontent with contemporary architectural theory and praxis that limit itself, more often than not, to the symbolic and historical aspects of architecture thereby neglecting the fact that architecture always fulfils a symptomatic function within socio-political struggles. BAVO claims that it is only by conceiving architecture as a symptom that its potential to make a difference in society can be assessed and/or enhanced.
