A Collective Construction Site

Martijn Hendriks

Using video, texts, photography and installations, Martijn Hendriks' work is at its core about the power of the imaginary over the real in contemporary media culture. A returning theme in his work is how we often refer to history, events, urban places and ourselves through media images, stories and fictions, dissolving strict boundaries between fiction and reality. Hendriks' work is an attempt to explore and challenge the role that these relations play in how we make sense of reality. He does this through documentation of moments and sites where the imagined and the real conflict, and in his more recent works and projects, by trying to manipulate their relations, by appropriating them, and re-enacting them.
