Katarina Zdjelar is an artist born in Belgrade, Serbia who lives and works in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Katarina Zdjelar is interested in spoken language. She is investigating how the physical act of spoken language differs from the encrypted version that is written language. In her work, she concentrates on the significance of language as part of ones cultural identity. The mother tongue will function as a mobile ‘home’; it will set you apart from the rest and makes you aware of your position within society. When speaking a different language, ‘noise’ arises: hesitation, an obvious accent, articulation and involuntary use of transferred idiom and proverbs. Katharina Zdjelar does research to how cultural identity is affected when two different languages collide.
