Performing Objects – Bie Michels and Anja Veirman

Performing Objects experiments with objects and their possibilities to act as an interactive performer towards its users or audience. This project researches different ways artists can anticipate this process during the conceptualisation and the conception of their work. The artworks made for this project will possibly manifest themselves in different locations outside the regular arts contexts.

Bie Michels will present the results of her working period in Madagascar last summer for the project ‘Bricks in Madagascar’ and Anja Veirman will introduce ritual textiles from Mali. ‘Bricks in Madagascar’ is a participative and intercultural research project in progress initiated by Bie Michels two years ago. It is an anthropological art act, including its ethical/aesthetic dimensions in a postcolonial context, starting from the brick culture in Antananarivo (Madagascar). The brick as both object and point of departure for understanding the cultural context, in interaction with local workers, artists, an anthropologist. It will result in a total installation featuring a film installation and responses (new works) by the participating Madagascan artists.
