Open Call for proposals 2011
HMK {Hotel MariaKapel}

A.I.R. Hotel MariaKapel invites aritists, curators and researchers to submit proposals for our 2011 programme.

Deadline: 1 June 2010 (stamped with that date on enveloppe is on time)

About HMK
Hotel Mariakapel is an artist-run residency and project space in Hoorn, a 16th century town by the IJsselmeer, just 40 km north of Amsterdam. In the old center of the town, in a medieval orphanage with adjacent inner garden and
Maria Chapel, Hotel Mariakapel receives artists from all over the world.
The programme involves artists and curators working in a wide range of media, focusing on installation and context based work, video/film and performance art. Projects are developed both in public space and in the chapel?s
exhibition space. Hotel MariaKapel is kindly supported by Hoorn City Council, the Province of Noord-Holland, and the Mondriaan Foundation.

Things to consider when applying:
When sending in a proposal for an artistic or curatorial project, please take in careful consideration the specific context of Hotel MariaKapel. The context of HMK includes the possibility to work with a group of artists; a small town setting (eg, absence of a big local art scene/discourse); the combination of a locally rooted initiative with exhibitions of national appeal. We strongly advise you to read into the context of HMK (and Hoorn) prior to submitting a proposal.

HMK has a strong preference for two types of projects:
1 - Projects that make full use of the unique opportunities offered by the presence of a guesthouse and a longer stay, for instance intensive (international) collaboration or developing a new strand of work
2 - Projects challenging, bending or ignoring logic, socio-economic relations and/or artistic conventions in an engaging manner.

Artists, art historians or curators who temporarily require a base in The Netherlands or who need a change of setting for a while may apply. We aim to offer a small per diem budget, free use of the guesthouse and its facilities, possible reimbursement for travel costs. We do ask that you give a presentation that suits your research, prior to your departure. We especially welcome research proposals coming from artists.

Accommodation and living facilities are provided for invited artists or artists groups to complete a period of work culminating in a final exhibition in the adjacent exhibition space. Residencies vary in length and depend on the nature of the work; we feel between one and two months is a good duration. The length of the residency is agreed in advance. The resulting exhibitions which are open to the public, usually take place for 3-4 weeks.
Hotel Mariakapel is responsible for all mail-outs and promotional activity in relation to the shows, which include regional, national and international contacts.
The residency includes use of all facilities (private room, wireless internet, shared kitchen, washing machine / dryer, basic tools, some audio & video equipment ). We can host 8 people in 4 bedrooms, you might be sharing a room.
Hotel MariaKapel provides a budget to resident artists (travel, materials, fee, some living costs) , depending on individual projects, but advises artists to secure additional funding elsewhere.

1.Read our OPEN CALL 2011 ( this text, you just read! )
2.Read our application formcarefully!

The GeoAIR Residency Program from 2010

Contributed by GEO AIR on 14/07/2009 13:33 in Calls for participation

The GeoAIR Residency Program from 2010

The GeoAIR residency program is a self directed residency program, that offers primarily curators and cultural producers the opportunity to base themselves in Tbilisi and use this location as a starting point to build networks, meet artists, cultural institutions and curators from the Caucasus region, and develop and deepen their knowledge and research of the Caucasus context. In return local artists, curators and organizations will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge about the innovative ways that many international curators are working. GeoAir has designated her residency mainly for curators or cultural producers because it feels that they are most able to affect multiplier effects through exchange and production and are more equipped to use the residency as a platform from which to jump for to instigate future collaborations between the resident and artists and organizations form the Caucasus region.

The aim of GeoAIR is to encourage different ways of thinking about and approaching issues of artistic and professional development, dialogue, exchange, and research within the Caucasus context. GeoAIR offers a dynamic residency model designed around tapping into the regional context of the residency. The program encourages the resident to delve into his/her perception of this context and to revisit their perception and question it. This is viewed as mutually benefiting for the curators repertoire and professional development in general and for the regions exposure to new artistic experiences.

GeoAIR does not propose a set program or conditions. Instead GeoAIR is responsive to ideas and opportunities that emerge from our network and proposed resident projects. The term self directed residency reflects this approach.

GeoAIR assists in the realization, investigation and conception of new productions and research through connecting the resident with the suited organizations, curators, artists, venues and research opportunities in relation to the proposed project. GeoAIRs flexible platform enables the program and the resident to work with a wide variety of partners on innovative project collaborations.

This structure addresses the need for information and knowledge exchange and recognizes the potential for wider impact and multiplier effects and encourages the creation of this ripple effect both in and outside Caucasus region.

In addition GeoAIR offers a substantial archive that sets out to map the art activity within the Caucasus region, and asks from each resident to contribute to this database.

In this archive one will find artists, curators, writers and organizations who have contributed to past and current GeoAIR projects and initiatives and additional information about the GeoAIR network and activities in the Caucasus including catalogues, reviews, artist portfolios, art magazines and other publications. The database reflects the history of people and places that, in the end, define GeoAIR and outlines the potential of the region and its future possibilities.

How to apply:

To apply, please send us your proposal, requirements (when and how long you would like to stay), your resume, and images of your work (if necessary). We will consider the requests at anytime. Our selection committee will respond with a decision depending on availability and timeframe.

Pilot Project:

The GeoAIR residency program will start with a pilot year. In this year the residents that will stay at GeoAIR are selected by invitation only, but will follow a similar application procedure as described above. The aim of the pilot year is to get a better insight into the variety of expectations and desired goals of the residents, participating organizations and artists. Our goal is to engage in a constructive dialogue that will identify the main challenges of this residency program while discussing possible solutions and potential changes. For the pilot project GeoAIR will invite specific candidates; operating in the field of visual culture, playing a dynamic role in mediating, structuring and altering artistic contexts and relationships and with a critical understanding of how one negotiates ones own position within contemporary discourse. These candidates will each have their own approaches and goals and will challenge the program to offer the most flexible and productive platform from which they can operate.

While the GeoAIR residency program is running its pilot year it is also setting up a financial structure that will allow the program to run its best course and support the residents in achieving their goals. The input and feedback from the pilot residents in this first year will be crucial for the development and effectiveness of the program.

Financing:

This program is managed on a not-for-profit basis. Residents will receive their own housing and office-style studio with access to all GeoAIR facilities including the archive. The program provides residents access to the vast GeoAIR network that includes individuals spanning different disciplines, professions, and regions. GeoAIR provides residents with all the necessary support and connections to help them achieve their proposal and research goals primarily in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. A related community based network can provide professional and personal support to the artists. Residents are asked to look for their own funding of their projects. GeoAIR will offer help in looking for funding opportunities.

taking FROM leaving IN moving ON - urban nomadism

taking FROM leaving IN moving ON - urban nomadism

BOOK >>> Open Call
////////////////////

The intended publication discusses one kind of Neo-Nomadism, represented by a creative class. Beyond dispute this creative mobile society is a privileged minority within a global motion. This fact is to be accepted. But one can argue that a nomadic lifestyle supports critical artistic productions on globalisation-based mechanisms and that art can convey this to an audience. Thus a cultural identity created by media should be discussed, so that prejudices and discrimination may be gotten rid of.

This work focuses on the influence of continuously shifting urban spaces, structures and flows on the creative working process. Everyday life in different cities, as well as an analysis of urban space, city exploration and its methods, such as mapping, should be broached. Cities are understood as heterogeneous structures and should be used and fully explored as laboratories and playgrounds.

The publication is open for the presentation of contextual and site-specific interventions in public space generated by a nomadic way of life as well as works dealing with mobility only.
This collection should represent a snapshot of this artistic practice at the beginning of the 21st century.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Contributions of any kind of text dealing in a broader sense with the topic in an artistic, architectural or theoretical way, are called for.
It could either be a textual or photographic work or a combination of both.
In consequence of the graphical concept of the publication, there can be some changes of the contribution, which will be always discussed with the participants.

Please, hand in an abstract of your proposal (about 300 words) and a brief description of yourself, no longer than 100 words.

DEADLINE for abstract: 15th of July (+ 7 days)

Urban Action 2010

Contributed by Bat-Yam Biennale 2010 on 10/07/2009 21:11 in Calls for participation

Urban Action 2010

Roadwork, construction, renovation, paving, roads closed for resurfacing… urban space is a constantly shifting entity. While the permanent "flexibility" of urban reality allows for dynamic evolution, it also lends a sense of uncertainty to everyday life. The 2010 Bat-Yam Biennale invites projects that examine the city's “flexible” nature in relation to both infrastructures and resources, offering innovative uses for spaces that are under construction, transforming them into functional, temporal urban spaces.

The Bat-Yam Biennale functions as a laboratory through which attitudes in and towards urban space are examined. Urban Action 2010 continues the urban action begun in the first biennale , in which Hosting was the theme.

Urban Action 2010 – the concept

Urban Action 2010 focuses on the tension between the temporary and the permanent, between the planned and the experienced. The Biennale examines the occasionally tense relationships between the city’s attempt to create order through long-term plans, and the everyday chaos that is the product of that process. Our goal is to encourage spaces and situations that function from within the state of a given temporality, drawing energy from this very flexibility.

The Biennale will examine whether it's possible to encourage urban situations that use temporality and change as their raw materials. The Biennale asks whether the state of temporality can become a statutory classification. Urban actions will strive to change patterns and attitudes, promoting partnership of the residents with the city. The Biennale also redefines relationships between residents, planners, stakeholders and the municipality.

Paying heed to local and global social, ecological, economic and statutory issues, Urban Action 2010 encourages projects that investigate and innovate the use of urban space.

Urban Action 2010 – the call

We invite anyone involved or interested in urbanism to propose interventions in the city of Bat-Yam. We are looking for innovative proposals that will lead to the development and improvement of urban life.

The method of intervention is at the discretion of the planner, and may be physical, community-based, documentary or written. The Biennale encourages interdisciplinary and inter-project cooperation. Accepted proposals will receive an initial, need-based research and planning fee of up to $2,000.

Urban Action 2010 – the intervention

Proposals will focus on the zones defined by the municipality’s current and future infrastructure-focused projects; these municipal projects are planned for implementation by 2010. These urban zones are documented in 360° panoramic photos attached to this open call. Interventions may address an entire zone or parts thereof, and may last for any period of time.

For more information on the Biennale and Bat-Yam visit: www.biennale-batyam.org

Call for Proposals: Nomadic Village 2009

Contributed by On The Road Productions on 19/05/2009 16:38 in Calls for participation

Call for Proposals: Nomadic Village 2009
20th-30th of August 2009
Pavlikeni, Bulgaria

Organiser: On The Road Productions (www.lufka.org)
In the last decade, many traditional obstacles to exploring
the world as an individual, like borders and monopolies of
institutions and information, vanished. To probe this freedom,
many mobile projects like traveling mini-states, on-the-roadcinemas,
busses converted to ateliers and galleries and transnational
music projects started to appear. In this context, On
The Road Productions (ORP) exercises an artistic activism,
that finds and creates spaces, in which artists can work
outside of the walls of existing institutions. ORP fosters
projects that aim at finding and expressing independent and
original views. Centerpiece is a Steyr-Ikarus bus that has
been converted into an atelier-, office- and gallery-space.
The Nomadic Village is going to be an enlarged space of that
character, an artist residence with a slight festival
character, in which various mobile projects are going to
create a microcosm together. The participants will bring their
own housings, like busses, vans or caravans, that will become
the structure of the temporary village.
Location of the Nomadic Village

The location is an empty lot on the fringe of Pavlikeni. Not
far from the center, but remote enough, it provides a good
setting for the village to come into existence. We will create
the space that will surround us, and follow artistic discourse
and work between land-art, video, music and more. The common
denominator is an interest in modern nomadism.
The first week (20th – 27th of August) we will focus on the
community. The village will become a temporary, partly
improvised setting: Our autonomous space, in which original
projects can be realized in an adequate, self-created
surrounding.

On the last 2 days (28th – 29th of August) the village will
present itself to the world. In the Nomadic Village we will
put up installations, performances, concerts and exhibitions.
Besides that, there is also the option of showing certain
works in Pavlikeni. People from Pavlikeni as well as international guests will be
invited to get a taste of our temporary microcosm.
To help the realization of projects, ORP can provide the
following:
-Contact with the town of Pavlikeni (for public presentations
etc.)
-rental of 2 mongolian yurtas as living or working space
-contacts for rental of camping vans in Austria and maybe
Bulgaria
-support with the development and concepts of projects
-technic for video projection, sound installation and
concerts, an analogue colour darkroom
-work-places (tents, air-conditioned bus)
-internet
The paricipants should bring their own housing and be able to
finance their projects independently. ORP has to receive a
short project description (title, concept, participants) prior
to the Nomadic Village. Guests who visit the public
presentations are excepted from this, and are also invited to
stay in hotel Bora, not far from the village.
Due to the nature of the Nomadic Village (it is still
growing), not all possibilities are listed here. If you have
project-specific questions, please contact On The Road
Productions.
