Sideways Festival 2012 -  Exploring pathscapes in Belgium --- August 17th till September 17th 2012

Sideways is a translocal, experimental festival for contemporary art and cultural research, exploring different ‘pathscapes’ in the northern region of Belgium. This first-time event will unfold on the go across a four week period in the summer of 2012. It foresees a broad program of visual art, walks, live art and sitespecific interventions. The project is a joint initiative of an environmental NGO (Trage Wegen), a visual arts’ centre (Verbeke Foundation) and an artist collective (Glasbak). The festival invites artists and audiences to explore the many non-motorized paths and trails folded into the spaces of our everyday life. We propose the term pathscapes to differentiate these landscape lines and their surroundings form motorized roads and streets. Ubiquitous yet overlooked, these pathscapes comprise a broad diversity of ‘spaces of going’: crooked rural footpaths; cycleways spanning many kilometres; straight tow paths on the banks of waterways; transient ‘desire lines’ leading from one urban area to another; barely perceptible, overgrown backroads; picturesque hollow ways; etc. Along these paths and trails, people move around and engage with their surroundings. Sideways sparks an investigation of these familiar places, asking artists to visit them, to rethink or re-imagine our experiences as we go along a variety of pathscapes. As such, the festival aims to question the past history, present use and future potential of these landscape features, as well as our conceptions of time, space, movement and memory.

The event itself moves beyond the conventional spaces of art display and reception. The Sideways programme stages diverse actions and situations on the open-air sites of paths and trails, both rural and urban. The programming blends arts-based and artistic practices with more vernacular forms of creativity and poetic practice that emerge along pathways. As such, Sideways sets out to create a collaborative meeting ground where artists and audiences can experience the multiple charms of being on the go.

The Sideways Festival is currently accepting artists’ proposals.
General considerations and requirements
- All projects must engage with the main thematic thread of Sideways (pathscapes) or address related questions (see also project background below).
- Proposals may concern the journey component of the festival (or a phase thereof), as well as an intervention at one of the festival nodes (or a combination of both).
- Sideways is an outdoor festival taking place along actual footpaths, cycleways and backroads. Projects should consider the here and now of these sites: alongside people purposefully visiting the festival event, many passers-by will come across the works by chance. Overall, audience engagement will be essential to the success of the experiences, for both artist and audience.
- Art projects can deal with the sites (pathscapes) in various ways: physically, experientially, socially, by association, etc. Projects can take the form of outdoor installations, choreographed physical activities, artist-led excursions, work with new/locative media, meetings, ephemeral gestures, performances, sculptures, mapping, etc. Artists may also be involved in the shaping of the festival journey (introducing cues for action, a consistent attribute or focus, a blog or log book, etc.).
- The festival organisation will facilitate local partnerships, undertake all negotiations to allow projects to use public/private space and provide the necessary production facilities (residencies, promotional support, assistance in development of the project etc.). However, artists are expected to be highly involved in the preparation and installation of their exhibit, project or performance.

Procedure and timeline
The collaboration with artists is based upon the procedure outlined below. Depending on the dynamics of the festival’s development, some elements may be added or altered.
- August 15th 2011 – Deadline for receipt of proposals and applications.
- Projects will be reviewed and selected by a jury panel including art experts and the Sideways team. Notification of accepted proposals will follow latest August 30th 2011.
- A series of prospective visits to different festival sites will be organized in September 2011. Selected artists will be invited to take part in these exchange meetings, conceived as moments to explore the terrain, match expectations, finetune project forms, etc.
- Selected projects will be realised, presented and/or performed as part of the Sideways festival, between August 17th and September 17th 2012 (tbc).

Unlike unrealized architectural projects, which are frequently exhibited and circulated, unrealized artworks tend to remain unnoticed or little known. But perhaps there is another form of artistic agency in the partial expression, the incomplete idea, the projection of a mere intention? Agency of Unrealized Projects (AUP) seeks to document and display these works, in this way charting the terrain of a contingent future.

Though the state of being unrealized implies the potential for realization, not all projects are intended to be carried out. In other instances, artists deliberately leave works incomplete, to record very interesting "failures" or experiments. Other planned projects involve consciously utopian, non-utilitarian, and conceptual spaces that were not made available for realization. Whether censored, forgotten, postponed, impossible, or rejected, unrealized projects form a unique testament to the speculative power of non-action.

You are invited to contribute your own unrealized projects to AUP's growing archive. Contributions can include text (DOC) and image files (two JPEGs or PDFs up to 2MB each), and can be submitted online at www.e-flux.com/aup. Please include one paragraph describing your project.

The Agency of Unrealized Projects (AUP) will be opening a temporary office in Basel this June, comprising of an archive of unrealized art projects. This will present projects collected through this open call and those collated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Guy Tortosa following several years of international research conducted in the late 90s. AUP follows the exhibition of the book project Unbuilt Roads: 107 Unrealized Projects, presented as a public archive at e-flux in 2009.

AUP is a project of e-flux in collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery devised by Julieta Aranda, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Julia Peyton-Jones and Anton Vidokle.

Description
In 2011, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain will host the next edition of project room @ aquarium, an artist-in-residency programme based in the so-called "Aquarium", a 175 sqm steel and glass pavilion. This international residency programme, while welcoming proposals taking full advantage of the place's very specific architecture, is encouraging applications aiming to stimulate exchange and debate in relation with the local context and socio-cultural issues in Luxembourg.

project room @ aquarium forms an integral part of the Casino Luxembourg's agenda of exhibitions and events. Furthermore to the work that the participants are asked to realise during their stay in Luxembourg, they are expected to participate in the activities of Casino Luxembourg on specific occasions to be defined with the Casino team. Their project will be exhibited over a period of two months at the end of the residency and documented in a publication.

Eligibility
The residency is open to all individuals or artists' collectives wishing to develop their practice in a professional context by creating new work. Applicants are free to choose their means of artistic expression but must give documented proof of at least three years' work and exhibition practice and not be older than 40 years. In order to facilitate communication with the local scene, participants should be fluent in either English, French or German. All applicants must hold a valid visa for the duration of the residency.

Selection procedure
A jury of experts will select the candidates for the two residencies to be held in 2011 based on the quality of work and the applicants' potential to use the residency to maximum benefit. The selected candidates will be informed of the jury results via email at the end of February 2011.

Jury
The 2010/2011 years' jury members are Jean-Jacques Dumont, artist and professor, École supérieure d'art Metz Métropole (ESAMM) and École Supérieure des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (ÉSADS); Berit Fischer, freelance curator, Berlin; Emmanuel Lambion, freelance curator and art worker / Bn Projects, Brussels; Kevin Muhlen, artistic director, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain; Christine Walentiny, exhibitions manager and project coordinator, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain.

Budget
Casino Luxembourg will provide financial and technical support and will be in charge of implementing the artist's project to a maximum cost of EUR 10,000. Participants will be accommodated in a centrally located, self-sufficient flat at Centre Culturel de Rencontres Abbaye de Neumünster in Luxembourg city. Casino Luxembourg will take over the artist's travel costs to and from Luxemburg and will provide a bulk sum of EUR 1,800 toward general expenses, to be paid in four instalments, the first of which will be made upon arrival. At the end of the residency, participants will receive an artist fee of EUR 1,500.

OPEN CALL for the 2011-edition:

BAC, Baltic Art Center in Visby, Sweden; The Factory of Art and Design (FFKD) in Copenhagen, Denmark and Hordaland Art Centre in Bergen, Norway jointly invite professionals within the field of visual art to apply to our new Collaborative Research Residency.

The Collaborative Research Residency offers one month residencies spring 2011 for research groups of three collaborators where at least one has a contemporary visual arts background (artist/curator/art critic). The programme encourages new relationships and should be seen as a chance to try out different types of collaborations, which may have an inter-disciplinary character. We welcome applications from research groups of three people, where a minimum of two people are based in or coming from the Nordic and Baltic countries.

This residency programme is a pilot project, and differs from our other residency programmes in two ways: it focuses on collaborative rather than individual practice, and it emphasises the research phase.

The application should outline the initial research idea, how you imagine the collaborative research process, as well as a clear motivation for why you wish to collaborate and how you see that your respective practices can enrich each other.

In 2011 we offer residencies to three groups of three people each to stay for one month in one of the three host institutions. A stipend of 1400 per month for each person, travel costs up to 1000 for the group, accommodation and a studio or office facility will be provided. 500 will be allocated to each collaborating unit for expenses associated to their research.

The application should include: a description of the initial idea, an outline of the imagined process and a clear motivation for the collaboration.

A minimum of two applicants must be from any of the Nordic or Baltic countries, or be professionally based in any of these countries.

Hordaland Art Centre based in Bergen, Norway was established 1976 as the first artist run art centre in Norway. Initiated in 1994, the Curatorial Programme of de Appel arts centre wishes to offer young curators a condensed package of experiences and skills that can be seen as instruments to enhance the development of their professional career. The eight-month long Curatorial Programme exists in its current form since 2006, with a thematically organised curriculum and an extended tutorial team. It encompasses a dense array of theoretical seminars, thematic workshops, field trips in Europe and Asia, practice-related assignments and encounters with artists and art professionals. The programme pays attention to the history of exhibition-making, diverse curatorial practices, institution building and project management. The unique thematic focus is on the polarity between 'free-lance ' and 'institutional' curating and on the examination of 'context-responsive' curating. The programme explores through which formats and methodologies curators deal with the presentation of art in the 'expanded field' outside of the white cube and how they respond to the cultural moment.


The following parts of the programme are considered to be of vital importance:

- The opportunity to research theoretical issues and developments in regular sessions with a tutorial teamconsisting e.g. of Floris Alkemade (architect,NL), Liesbeth Bik (visual artist, NL), Ann Demeester (director de Appel arts centre, BE/NL), Charles Esche (director Van Abbe Museum, UK/NL), Annie Fletcher (curator, IR/NL), Elena Filipovic (curator/writer, US/BE), Henk Slager (philosopher/curator, NL), Lisette Smits (independent researcher/curator, NL), and Jan Verwoert (art critic, DE).

- The opportunity to meet and have an exchange with a large number of artists, curators, critics and other international professionals through thematic seminars and informal encounters. Guest teachers over the past years have been e.g. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Gerardo Mosquera, Ann Goldstein, Paul O'Neill, Paulo Herkenhoff, Jacques Rancière, Simon Sheikh, Pier Luigi Tazzi, Jan Hoet, Teresa Gleadowe, Tirdad Zolghadr, Ulay and Nina Möntmann.

- The opportunity to get acquainted with de Appel arts centre from 'the inside', and get a better insight into the mechanisms and governing principles of a contemporary institution for visual arts.

- The possibility to make a long journey outside of Western Europe and a minimum of 7 field trips, within Europe.


APPLICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

1. A letter of motivation in which you state your personal drive as well as your expectations of the programme.
2. A proposal for a project (5-15 pages), including: concept and location of the project (main focus, explanation of context and relevance), the participating artists (including some image material), a realistic budget, a publicity plan (not obliged)
3. A CV, including an extensive description of your relevant working experience
4. Two written references of (former) tutors, professors or employers, in English.

On the basis of the submitted documents twelve candidates will be short-listed. These candidates will be invited to come to Amsterdam in the second week of March for an interview with an international jury, who will select the final six participants of the Curatorial Programme 2011/2012.

The Spring Exhibition (‘Forårsudstillingen’) is one of the most important open submission
exhibitions in Europe, and has been held annually at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen since 1857. It
originated as an exhibition showing new works by Danish artists and now features participants
from many countries. Over the years the exhibition has included early works by such renowned
international figures as Vilhelm Hammershøi, Alvar Aalto, Per Kirkeby, Olafur Eliasson, Lilibeth
Cuenca Rasmussen and many others.

Submissions for the Spring Exhibition 2011 can be made by artists of any nationality and country of
residence, over the age of 18, and are made digitally in the period 10 -16 January 2011. You can
apply with up to 5 contributions in the categories: painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, graphic
art, architecture, design / craft., photography, video, film, performance, animation, sound art,
net.art, software art, visual poetry (mixed forms of text and image).

One of the consistent features of the Spring Exhibition is its independent jury, which consists of
artists and other arts professionals from Scandinavia and beyond. Jury members are chosen for
their sympathy with artists’ working practices, as well as for their strong international outlook, and in
2011 the jury will be:

Within the framework of the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art in 2012, curated by Artur Żmijewski, artists from all over the world are requested to send in their artist material for a research investigation, following the conditions below.

We accept artistic material in hard copy formats not bigger than A3 (297 x 420 mm or 11.69 x 16.54 in.), printed images, digital data, as well as DVDs.
PDFs in A4 (297 mm x 210 mm or 11.7 x 8.3 inches) or fax will also be accepted.
Please do not send any original artworks.
We welcome all possible languages of your artistic comments and explanations. However there should equally be an English version.

As the research also focuses on the question whether artists consider themselves to be political, please inform us about your political inclination (e.g. rightist, leftist, liberal, nationalist, anarchist, feminist, masculinist, or whatever you identify yourself with) or whether you are not interested in politics at all.

Metamatic Research Initiative extends deadline for Call for Entries to 1 September The newly founded Metamatic Research Initiative in Amsterdam today renewed its call for entries for commissioned works. This results from a constructive dialogue with several artists who argued for more time to prepare proposals for the ambitious project. The Research Initiative is happy to be able to comply with this request. The deadline has been extended until Wednesday 1 September 2010, 6 pm CET.

The call is open to visual artists in all disciplines who are stimulated, inspired, influenced or challenged by the work and philosophy of the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (1925-1991). The Metamatic Research Initiative is organised by All Art Initiatives Foundation, which supports artistic and academic research.

A maximum of six projects will be selected for execution. The recipients of the commissions will have the unique opportunity to realise a work in relation to the work and philosophy of Jean Tinguely. A total budget of €600,000.00 is available for the six commissions.

1646 is an artists
initiative / project-space in the centre of The Hague, which promotes the exchange between local, national and international artists and art spaces. The aim is to create an active research for current developments in the shifting landscapes of art, culture, and theory. At the end of each residency there will be a presentation of the works or research made during the period.

Studio Information
In addition to a small studio space in the center of The Hague and living accommodations for the duration of the residency, participants profit from the direct access to a multi-faceted and internationally oriented network of artists and creatives.
1646 provides a 21 sqm private workspace located in the back of its exhibition space. The studio comes equipped with wireless internet connection, and all the community resources 1646 has to offer.

1646 does not have a fixed location but uses temporary locations/apartments in the city.

4th Cairo Video Festival - Call for Submissions - Medrar

Medrar for Contemporary Art calls for submissions for its 4th International Video Festival, which will be hosted by the Goethe-Institut in downtown Cairo.

Initiated by the Cairo-based artists' initiative Medrar for Contemporary Art in 2005, this festival continues its focus on providing a platform for sharing and discussing newly produced high concept / low budget experimental videos.

Based on a call for works by emerging artists, the festival program takes on the format of a concise series of video screenings, accompanied by talks and discussions with video-makers and curators to tackle some of the key issues presented in the works.
