SOMA is an experimental project conceived to optimise discussion and exchange in the field of contemporary art. Our goal is to produce a counterpoint to the dynamics of art schools, museums, and galleries. SOMA has been conceived by local contemporary artists with the intention of building upon the experiences of local alternative spaces like La Panadería and T44.

The Institute of Social Hypocrisy

Tags: Artists, Artprojects.

The Institute of Social Hypocrisy is an artificial organization that fronts an artist-led project in the centre of Paris. The ISH is conducted in the form of a protracted performance piece and its very existence is brought about by inviting collaboration with other participants. Each player and event contributes vital information and connections that allow the Institute to progress.

Experimental Station

Tags: Activism, Artinitiatives, Artists, Artprojects, Design, Recycling.

Taking its name from a speech given by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901 ("The Art and Craft of the Machine"), the Experimental Station exceeds even Wright's dream of a place where art and technology would embrace one another under the same roof, where such an encounter would lead to new ideas and innovative designs and practices.

My work is landscape-based, rooted in a subtle exploration of humanity’s complex relationship with nature and, by extension, with itself. I employ formal devices such as restricted color palates, careful consideration of the tensions between grounds and selective use of line and shape to further the dialog between aesthetics, content, and form. What results in the work is my own unique visual system, imbued with cultural, natural, and scientific context from my travels all over the world

Alarmbells are ringing. What we need is step back and see the world as the astronauts saw it and ask ourselves how are we managing that? Big cities are the new centres to be connected into a global society that works together.

Chto delat / What is to be done? was founded in early 2003 in Petersburg by a workgroup of artists, critics, philosophers, and writers from Petersburg, Moscow, and Nizhny Novgorod (see full list of participants on the web site) with the goal of merging political theory, art, and activism.

My work utilizes sculptural object, installation and drawing. Employing a combination of natural and industrial materials. I am interested in articulating humankind’s desire to take command over the earth --alluding to conflicts with ecology, politics, ourselves and the level of human absence and/or presence in industry. I often borrow from man-made elements and architectural environments and adjoin them with natural habitats, asking us to reflect on our precarious relationship with our surroundings.

Michel de Broin

Tags: Artists.

Born in 1970 in Montreal, Michel de Broin lives and works in Montreal and in Berlin. Through a collection of objects and actions, his works seek to escape the constraining nature of modern utopian aspirations whilst attempting to reenact them in playful, jesting objects that glorify the referent on the one hand while upstaging it on the other.

Jacob TV is preoccupied with American media and world events and draws raw material from those sources. His work possesses an explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design. In his so called boombox works, he makes superb use of electronics, incorporating sound bytes from political speeches, commercials, interviews, talk shows, TVangelists, and what have you - 'urban songs' with a colorful mix of high and low culture.

Prisoners' Inventions - Temporary Services

Tags: Activism, Architecture, Artists, Inventions.

This project was a collaboration with Angelo, an incarcerated artist. He illustrated many incredible inventions made by prisoners to fill needs that the restrictive environment of the prison tries to supress. The inventions cover everything from homemade sex dolls, condoms, salt and peper shakers to chess sets. We collaborated on this project with Angelo for over two years. We had many additional collaborators who made a book, exhibition of re-created inventions and a prison cell possible.

Sophie Krier was born in 1976 in Halle, Belgium and has the Luxemburgish nationality . She lives and works in Rotterdam since her graduation from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1999. Her work field is situated in the periphery of the design profession and includes activities such as teaching, writing, collecting, editing, experimenting. Her work is process-oriented and always attempts to investigate the space (for innovation, playfulness, reflection) within a given assignment. The work is therefore often described as editorial. At the core of each concept is the wish to generate meaningful relationships between message, context, and receivers.
